The Law of Reciprocity

Galatians 6:7 (KJV) “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

Over the weekend, I met a young man who asked if it were alright to wear blue jeans to church. I shared with him that it was totally alright—especially if that were all he had to wear. When he shared with me that he only owned one suit, I felt compelled to go in my closet and give him a suit I’d only worn one time (we are about the same size). Something interesting happened the very next day. After church, I went by one of our member’s homes to pick up a ministry item and right before I left, he informed me that he had something for me. To my surprise, he brought me several brand new clothing items less than 24 hours after I’d given a suit to someone else.

My experience was a manifestation of Galatians 6:7, “…whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” The word, “whatever” is key in this verse. Because I’d sown clothing, that’s exactly what I reaped! I grew up on a farm, and we never reaped okra when we planted tomatoes! Jesus said in Matthew 7:12, “…whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them…” Paul told the church at Galatia that, “…he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.” (Galatians 6:9) Unfortunately, there are those who are upset with a harvest that they planted the seed to receive!

Mike Murdock once said that, “Everything in life is a seed.” This includes things that we take for granted—from a smile to our effort at our jobs. On this last day of the work week, let’s evaluate the seed that we’re sowing. Remember: You can’t expect to receive a good harvest when you sow bad seed.”

Let’s Pray:
“Father, remind us today of the law of sowing and reaping. Help us to sow good seed today and always, in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Daily Prayer:
“Oh, that You would bless me indeed,
and enlarge my territory,
that Your hand would be with me,
and that You would keep me from evil,
that I may not cause pain!”
The Prayer of Jabez, I Chronicles 4:10

Daily Confession:
Father, I thank You for making me the head and not the tail

Above only and not beneath

The lender and not the borrower

The conqueror and not the conquered

I thank You for giving me all things that pertain unto life and godliness

And for delivering my life from death and destruction

So that I shall live and not die to declare your works

I thank You that no sickness shall live in my body

For by Your Stripes I'm healed

I confess that I will not be stressed, oppressed, or depressed

Because You're keeping me in perfect peace as my mind is stayed on Thee

I confess that I will not be distracted, disorganized, or in disarray,

but I will be diligent to what God has called me to do

I confess that there shall not be any lack in my life

For my God shall supply all my needs according to His Riches in Glory by Christ Jesus

Thank You that all things are working together for my good

And that You always cause me to triumph

OVERCOMING FEAR

Numbers 13:26 Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 Then they told him, and said: "We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there. 30 Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, "Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it."

I read in one of Dr. Myles Monroe’s books (I’m paraphrasing and not quoting) that the wealthiest place in the world is the graveyard. He said there were businesses, inventions, ideas, entrepreneurs, and other untapped potential that never manifested in the earth. I’m convinced that one of the reasons that people die “pregnant,” never giving birth to what God placed inside them was due to fear. While it is admirable to have reverential fear, the spirit of fear prohibits us from going forth in our assignments that God has given unto us. Many of you reading this devotional are full of spiritual potential that has been paralyzed by fear. You have visions, dreams, and “God Ideas,” but fear has hindered you from giving birth to what God desires to do in your life. Even though God has given you marching orders, the “what ifs” are holding you back from occupying your wealthy place.

When Moses sent the twelve men to spy out the Promised Land of Canaan (Numbers 13), they reported that the land was just like God said it would be. In fact, they had the fruit to prove it! However there was one problem: there were giants on the turf that God promised them. God established a very important principal with His people early in Scripture and it is this: “Whenever He gives us territory, there will be giants to conquer.” Understand, child of God, that there will not be any progress without opposition to overcome. However, we cannot allow the potential fear of our giants to anesthetize our faith. I’m sure that there are others around you operating in fear like ten of the twelve spies. Our assignment, however, requires that we be like Caleb who proclaimed to his leader, Moses, "Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it. (Numbers 14:30)" Purpose in your mind today to not allow the giant(s) of fear to stop you from walking into your place of abundance that God has promised.

Let’s Pray:
“Father, we thank You that You have given us the Power to overcome the fear that the enemy is sending our way. Thank You that You are greater than any obstacles, oppressions, and opposition that is against us. Father, our faith is in You and You alone. Help us to “fight the good fight of faith” this day, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

To Memorize:
I John 5:4: 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith (NASB).

The Power of Association

Various Scriptures

The 2011 National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star Game was played this past Sunday in Los Angeles, California. At the beginning of the game, one of the reporters interviewed Kobe Bryant and asked his strategy or his approach to playing during the game Kobe responded by suggesting he’d utilize the skills he’s learned over the years and would basically rely on his jump shot to score. However, when the game started, the superstar played as if his Gatorade bottle were full of beverage from the fountain of youth! He went baseline for a reverse slam dunk in the 1st Quarter. He scored on the inside as well as the outside. On one play, he was ahead of the opposition when he received a pass from a teammate. Instead of just scoring the basket, it appeared as if he slowed down to wait on LeBron James and then dunked the ball as James tried to block the shot! When the reporters asked Kobe about his pre-game comments verses his play on the court, he told them that being around the younger players caused him to play like he did in his younger years.

I defend that the company we keep affects us in ways that we sometimes don’t even imagine. The Message Bible’s rendering of Paul’s warning to the Corinthian church reads, “Don't let anyone deceive you. Associating with bad people will ruin decent people. (1 Corinthians 15:33, GW)” While this passage admonishes us to stay away from bad influences, Psalm 27:17 encourages us to associate with and hang around those who are positive. The Contemporary English Version of that passage reads, “Just as iron sharpens iron, friends sharpen the minds of each other.” Proverbs 27:17 (CEV)

Always remember that the people you hang around with will influence you one or two ways—either positively or negatively.

Let’s Pray:
“Father, help us to associate with people who will add to our lives and not influence us negatively, in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

God Uses People

Genesis 37:12 One day when Joseph's brothers had taken the sheep to a pasture near Shechem, 13 his father Jacob said to him, "I want you to go to your brothers. They are with the sheep near Shechem." "Yes, sir," Joseph answered. 14 His father said, "Go and find out how your brothers and the sheep are doing. Then come back and let me know." So he sent him from Hebron Valley. Joseph was near Shechem 15 and wandering through the fields, when a man asked, "What are you looking for?" 16 Joseph answered, "I'm looking for my brothers who are watching the sheep. Can you tell me where they are?" 17 "They're not here anymore," the man replied. "I overheard them say they were going to Dothan." Joseph left and found his brothers in Dothan.

On my way home from Morning Glory this morning, I called the last leader I served when I was in the military, Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Kim Swindall. Along with getting reconnected, I called to thank him for helping to guide me through a very critical period in my life. In December 2000, I came down on orders to leave Fort Campbell to go to Fort Hood, Texas. I’d just started the church and was torn because of the success I’d had in the military. At that time, we were worshipping in a hotel, my three children were much smaller, and we were having difficulty finding our own facility. Whenever I’d talked to Colonel Swindall about the decision to stay in the military, he’d tell me, “Calvin, saving souls (spiritual) is more important than saving lives (physically as a U.S. Army medic). Although The Lord had told me to get out, He used Colonel Swindall to confirm that I was making the right decision and to assist with one of the biggest transitions of my life.

In Genesis 37, Jacob told Joseph to go and check on his brothers in a pasture near Shechem. When he (Joseph) arrived, his brothers had departed and gone to Dothan. While wandering in the field trying to locate them, he ran across an unnamed man who asked, “What are you looking for?” The gentleman then guided Joseph to the location that his brothers had gone. When you look in the rear view mirror of your life, you’ll find people (like the gentleman who direct Joseph) who have been used by God to get you to the place that you’ve arrived. Many times, we minimize those who have set good examples, imparted wisdom, and/or guided us in the right direction—sometimes during critical seasons in our lives. The exhortation today is to thank God for the people who have been used by God to touch our lives—either for a season, a reason, or a lifetime.

Trust His Guidance

John 16:13: However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Flashing lights (while driving) alert us of potential danger and warn us to proceed with caution. While driving recently, a passing driver flashed his lights as I was going uphill. When I reached the top of the hill, three cows had escaped from their fenced grazing pasture and were ingesting on the side of the road. Needless to say, the traffic on both sides was quickly backing up as commuters passed the animals with extreme caution.

One of the many reasons that we can give Our God praise is because He left His Spirit to comfort, lead, guide, teach, and show us things to come. Like natural lights flashing when we need to proceed with caution, The Holy Spirit warns us when there is danger ahead during our spiritual journeys. We can attribute some of the fixes, binds, and jams in our lives to our failure to heed the Counsel of the Comforter. In fact, one of the gauges of growth is when we can recognize and obey the “flashing lights” given us by the Spirit of God. Let’s resolve today to listen and submit to the Holy Spirit in every area of our lives.

Let’s Pray:
“Father, thank you for The God here on earth right now in the Person of The Holy Spirit. Thank you Lord, for loving us enough to leave us Someone Who knows the past, present, and future, and desires to lead us, guide us, and show us things to come. Help us to both recognize and yield to Your Voice this day, in Jesus’ Name we pray, Amen.”

Warning: “God is Always Watching!”

Various Scriptures

An encounter yesterday reaffirmed the importance of living lives that represent Christ at all times. Lunch with a spiritual son and daughter was interrupted by a 75-year old missionary who sat at an adjacent table. She informed us that she and her 80-year old husband were eavesdropping on our conversation! When she came over, one of the first questions that she asked was whether or not I was a preacher! After telling her testimony, she encouraged us to keep sharing the gospel because Jesus is soon to return. The episode proved that our lives are really being observed—whether we realize it or not.

While it should motivate us that others (humans) are watching, our greatest motivation ought be the fact that God is watching. When King David thought he’d camoflauged his sin from everyone else, the prophet Nathan reminded him of this reality—God saw it! There’s not a place in the universe where we can hide from His All-Seeing Eyes (Psalm 139:7-8). When Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce Joseph to sleep with her, he replied in Genesis 39:9, “There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness…” But his greatest motivation was that he didn’t want to “…sin against God?” (Genesis 39:9) Like Joseph, believers should allow our fear of The Lord to influence us to be on our best behavior at all times.

Wherever you are and regardless to what you do, remember this one simple truth—God is always watching!

Let’s Pray:
“Father, remind us that You’re always watching. Help us to fear You before and above everyone else, in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

KEEP MOVING

Galatians 6:9 And let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't get discouraged and give up. (TLB)

His plays and films have grossed around 500 million dollars in North America alone. The hilarious television show he created, “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne,” is the highest rated sitcom to ever appear on cable television. He is the most successful filmmaker outside of Hollywood. I’m sure you know to whom I’m referring, the one and only Tyler Perry.

Conversely, behind his success is a history of pain. His social profile archives a childhood of physical and mental abuse, episodes of sexual molestation, and two failed suicide attempts. Eleven short years ago, he was homeless and unsure where his next dollar would come. In an interview in Ebony magazine some time ago, he offered this advice: “…The key to life when it gets tough is to keep moving. Just keep moving.”

Life can sometimes feel overwhelming. There are periods when it seems that the more we pray the worse things get! During these times, we need to heed Bro. Tyler’s advice and “keep on moving.” Paul told the church at Galatia the following words, “And let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessings if we don’t get discouraged and give up.” (Galatians 6:9, TLB)

The exhortation today is to not give up…“keep moving.”

Let’s Pray:
“Father, help us to not give up, regardless to where we are in life, in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What are You Doing About it?

Judges 2:8 Then Joshua son of Nun, the servant of God, died. He was 110 years old. 9 They buried him in his allotted inheritance at Timnath Heres in the hills of Ephraim north of Mount Gaash. 10 Eventually that entire generation died and was buried. Then another generation grew up that didn't know anything of God or the work he had done for Israel.

I’m often approached by many who talk about the current generation that’s growing up in our society. I admit that the temptations from modern technology are many. But at the same time, there are far too many who are on the bandwagon of slander and not enough willing to bend their knees or crack open their Bibles to instruct our children. How many believers do you know who are guilty as the day is long of labeling and even “writing off” many in our society as hopeless? In many instances, we were just like those we ridicule when we were their ages before The Lord changed our lives!

One of the things that we find about Joshua is that his interactions with God’s people were similar to those of his leader and predecessor, Moses. Like a father, he instructed Israel on the importance of staying faithful and obedient to God. But despite all his instruction, example, and advice, after his death, the Bible says that the following generation that grew up knew nothing about God or the work He’d done for Israel. (Joshua 2:10) Since we learn from instruction, the failure wasn’t in the unlearned generation as much as it was in the generation their senior who failed to teach them.

Have we become like Joshua’s generation and are failing to instill what’s being taught to us into our children? Are we more interested in our children’s temporal profiles (clothes, cars, game systems) than we are their eternal well-being (Bibles, Christian books and CDs)? As a parent, if you died today, have you done your job in making sure you’ve invested into their spiritual lives? The exhortation today is to evaluate and re-evaluate our responsibility in passing on Christ to the next generation.

Let’s Pray:
“Father, we pray that You’ll help us to do our part in being Christian examples and role models to the next generation, in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Colossians 2:15 (NKJV) Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

Because of Jesus' death on the Cross and His resurrection from the dead, the forces of hell are already defeated. However, even though they have been legally stripped of their authority and power, they continue to roam around this earth, carrying out evil deeds like criminals, bandits, hooligans, and thugs. And just like criminals who refuse to submit to the law, these evil spirits will continue to operate in this world until some believer uses his God-given authority to enforce their defeat!

We need to get ahold of this truth: These demonic forces are legally stripped of their authority and are defeated! We are not puny, struggling believers who are somehow trying to learn how to cope with the devil's attacks against us. We're not merely trying to learn how to scrape by or survive. Jesus' death and resurrection gave us the legal authority to keep Satan under our feet, so we must always make sure we approach spiritual warfare as victors and not victims.

Let's look at Colossians 2:15 to gain a greater revelation of the victory Jesus has already accomplished for you and me through His death, burial, and resurrection. Paul tells us that Jesus "... made a shew of them openly...." The word "openly" is taken from the word parresia, a word that is used throughout the books of the New Testament to denote boldness or confidence.

By using the word parresia, Paul declares that when Jesus was finishing His dealings with Satan, His victory over the devil was no "quiet affair." Quite the contrary! Jesus boldly, confidently, and loudly exposed and displayed this now-defunct foe to Heaven's hosts. Make no mistake! When Jesus "made a shew of them openly," it was quite a spectacular show!

The verse continues, "... He made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it." The word "triumph" is taken from the Greek word triambeuo, which is a technical word used to describe a general or an emperor returning home from a grand victory in the enemy's territory. Specifically, the word "triumph" was used to describe the emperor's triumphal parade when he returned home.

When a returning emperor or general came striding through the gates on his big, powerful, and beautiful horse, he was accompanied by his fellow victorious warriors, who also appeared glorious after their triumphant battle. As the parade followed, the weaponry and treasures seized from the enemy's territory were grandly displayed for all to see.

The grand finale to this triumphal procession was the foreign ruler himself. This ruler had been beaten and bound in chains and was now being forced to walk in disgrace, shame, dishonor, embarrassment, and humiliation as crowds of people came to celebrate his defeat and to get a "peek" at a once-powerful but now totally defeated opponent.

So when Colossians 2:15 declares that Jesus triumphed over evil powers, it is explicitly declaring that Jesus took the enemy apart piece by piece as He thoroughly "spoiled principalities and powers." When Jesus was finished with those demonic forces, they were utterly plundered—"stripped to bare nakedness" and left with nothing in hand to retaliate!

Because of the words parresia and triumbeuo, Colossians 2:15 conveys this idea:
"... He gallantly strode into Heaven to celebrate His victory and the defeat of Satan and his forces. As part of His triumphal process, He flaunted the spoils seized from the hand of the enemy. Yet the greatest spectacle of all occurred when the enemy himself was openly put on display as bound, disgraced, disabled, defeated, humiliated, and stripped bare...."

Jesus' victory over Satan was a momentous affair! When Jesus returned, He was totally triumphant! The party Heaven threw that day was enormous! All of Heaven's hosts came to celebrate Jesus' victory and Satan's downfall and demise! Right there in front of everyone, Jesus displayed the devil and his cohorts, so all could know that this enemy no longer had the legitimate right or the necessary arms to prolong his rule of terrorism.

Once again, Satan is not a force we are trying to defeat; he is already defeated. But because very few believers know how to effectively use their God-given authority to resist Satan, he tries to continue illegally operating and doing damage to the souls of men and even to the creation itself.

No matter what demonic strategy may come against you this day or how many demons are assembled together for your destruction, you never have to go down defeated. Jesus plundered the enemy when He rose from the dead. So when you look into the mirror, you need to learn to see yourself as one who already has the victory You already possess the authority necessary to keep Satan under your feet where he belongs. Remember, you are no longer a victim—you are a victor!

Let’s Pray:
“Father, thank You for the victory over Satan that we have because of you, in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
